Michael van Gerwen, born in Boxtel in 1989, is one of the most influential figures in modern darts and now plays for the PDC. The Dutchman became the dominator of the sport in the 2010s and was ranked number one in the world in the PDC Order of Merit from 2014 to 2021 (7 years). This was a longer period than anyone before him. His seventeenth year was legendary, as he became not only the youngest major tournament winner of all time, but also the youngest darts player to throw a 9-darter on live television. During this IDL in 2006, van Gerwen also received his nickname "Mighty Mike" and adopted the venom-green darts shirt as his trademark. After moving to the PDC in 2007, his darts career became increasingly successful, including three PDC World Championship titles, seven Premier League titles, and three World Matchplay victories. By the 2025 World Championship , van Gerwen had thrown a total of 31 perfect 9-darters. He has also won many other titles and awards in darts.

Van Gerwen's playing style has changed over the years and was consistently characterized by energetic celebrations until about 2019. With the help of his 21.5g Winmau Darts, he consistently plays at the highest level. And his walk-on music is "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes.
